ANDREW COUNTY BANS SMOKING IN COURTHOUSE

The Andrew County Commission during their regular session passed Court Order AC 2006-09 which bans smoking and the use of tobacco in the Andrew County Courthouse and within 25 feet of the entrances t the Courthouse. Presiding Commissioner (and smoker) Larry Atkins made the motion which was adopted unanimously by Commissioners Dick Townsend and Greg Wall. Commissioner Atkins say, "We have been needing to make this move for some time. I am happy to be the one leading this effort. The public no longer has to put up with habits that some find uncomfortable." Commissioner Dick Townsend commented that he too was happy to make the Courthouse smoking free. Commissioner Greg Wall voiced the sentiment of the Commission when he stated, "I have no problems with people who smoke but the welfare of the Courthouse employees needs to be considered in making this move. Some people have complained that they have negative allergenic reaction to tobacco smoke and their needs must be considered."

The smoking and tobacco ban is set to go into effect as of July 1st, 2006

ANDREW COUNTY GETS NEW JAIL

The new Andrew County Jail will be built-with no tax increase to residents. Instead, Federal stimulus funding through the USDA Rural Development Direct Loan Program is expected to be the key financial source for the project. Detailed blueprints are expected to be ready sometimes in April, 2010. The USDA will take approximately 30 days to review the plans. After plans are reviewed and approved, requests for open bidding will be released - along with more details on the project - probably sometime in May. After a bid is accepted, a groundbreaking ceremony will be planned.

02-17-2010: To whom it may concern,

The Andrew County Commission met with First American Title as the plans for the new jail moves forward. A real estate purchase of two acres on Main Street, east of U.S. Business Hwy 71, was signed between Dr. William Rippe and the Andrew County Commission for $200,000.  The agreement also includes a donation of a half-acre with plans to sign a purchase agreement for another three-fourths of an acre with the Savannah Rural Fire Protection District. Architectural plans will need to be approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture before proceeding with jail's construction.
